Twenty years ago Time and The Guardian wrote up my podcast eleven days apart. Different decade, same habit — there's a new script, and there's platform work, both in flight. If you want in on something, I'm around.
About Me
The short version
I make films and I build software, and I've been doing both at once since 1998. There was never a switch.
What I'm actually good at is being early. December 2004 — four months after podcasting existed at all — The Guardian and Time both picked my show, Skinny Bones on Air, as the example of what this new thing was for. About two thousand people were listening a few times a month. In 2006 I sold my first feature as a paid podcast: thirteen episodes, two dollars a month, six for the whole film. Apple got around to paid podcast subscriptions in 2021.
From 2005 to 2009 I ran a startup monetizing content over RSS and came out of it with a provisional patent. I supervised post-production for a decade with a 45-terminal render farm underneath me. I won a Signal Award for sound design in 2023, in the middle of a long run of platform engineering.
Sound is the part that never stopped. I started as an assistant engineer in a recording studio in 1998, under Jim Waters — Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Sonic Youth, Lucinda Williams. I've scored my own shorts ever since. In 2023 I took a Signal Award, Silver, for sound design on a podcast. That same year I made an animated series, alone, about running scrum on the Death Star.
Right now it's AI: multi-agent document pipelines, ethics review for NeurIPS, a Model Context Protocol certification.
It isn't two careers. It's one job that keeps changing costume.
